NEW DELHI: An old India hand, Ahmad Tariq Karim, will be arriving here on Friday to take charge as the High Commissioner of Bangladesh.
A former career diplomat since 1967, Mr. Karim has headed missions in the United States, Iran and South Africa. He served as the Additional Foreign Secretary in Dhaka besides a stint as the Deputy High Commissioner in Delhi in the 1980s, a Bangladesh High Commission release said. Brought back from retirement, Mr. Karim’s appointment is among the several cleared by the new government, headed by Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina with academic-lawyer-physician Dipu Moni as the Foreign Minister. Dhaka has also named another old India hand, Akramul Qader, as its Ambassador in Washington and a serving Army officer Maj. Gen. Anup Kumar Chakma as the envoy to Myanmar, which borders both Bangladesh and India. Mr. Karim will head the Bangladeshi mission here at a time when both countries are attempting to forge a new relationship based on consultation and trust.
