WB offers to help make Ctg, Mongla regional seapor 1 Year, 3 Months ago Karma: 1
Great news...Bangladesh needs to make a new infrastructure plan to facilitate this project. The roads network need to be augmented to make use of these ports completely. The roads in Bangladesh are not capable of handling large traffic and the landscapes and roan constructions are not upto western standards.

The World Bank has offered assistance to the government for developing the ports of Chittagong and Mongla to the standards of regional seaports so taht countries such as India, Bhutan and Myanmar can use them.
The World Bank’s director of South Asian affairs, Sadiq Ahmed, made the proposal at a meeting with the communications minister, Syed Abul Hossain, at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Monday, pointing out the financial benefits Bangladesh would get from operational charges.
The World Bank also expressed its interest in providing funds to develop infrastructure to facilitate regional connectivity.
The communications minister said the government had planned construction of a railway along with the Padma Bridge in the Dhaka-Jessore route via Mawa, which will require $820 million.
‘We have sought funds from the World Bank for construction of the railway that will connect Dhaka and Jessore,’ Abul Hossain said, adding the construction of a deep seaport would also necessitate infrastructural development in the communications sector.
He said India, Myanmar, China and Bhutan would also have access to the proposed seaports.
The minister said the government would submit a comprehensive proposal to the World Bank, detailing its plan of the roads and the railways within a month. ‘A technical team from the WB will look into the plan and its feasibility,’ the minister added.
Sadik Ahmed said the Mongla and Chittagong seaports should be connected by railway. ‘It will need huge investment for expanding the ports and the roads and railway network for regional connectivity, and the World Bank is ready to offer assistance for this,’ said Sadiq, adding that regional connectivity might need transit facilities through Bangladesh.
