The news about suing past leaders of the country is making head turns in Bangladesh. A politician named Salaudding Qader Chowdhury of BNP, is planning to sue or bring sedition charges against the three caretaker governments and EC officials. The controversial Mr. Chowdhury is accused of lying to the EC about his educational background during the Election of 2008 and tried to Gag the media for publishing stories about him on Daily Star Newspaper on June 11, 2003. He is also the top loan dafaulter of Bangladesh in the recently published list from the finance ministry.
When I first hear the news I was thinking are you serious? How could a person with his repute can sue those three respected persons who has widespread support in Bangladesh and was instrumental in bringing the democracy to life in Bangladesh. How is that possible? Then I thought, the only reason this person is doing this is to grab news heading and with the idea that anything is possible in Bangladesh, where the bad person’s has more saying than the good and honest people. Its the way of life in 3rd world countries like Bangladesh, India and Pakistan. So no biggie, things will go on and subside in due time and corrupt persons will go unpunished.
But I have one say to the new government, enact a law that prohibits persons with dubious intentions can not sue the past governments whom ever it may be. There are situations when past leaders has to do things in their way for the sake of national security and running the nation, which might not make sense to ordinary people at that time but good for the long run as we are seeing in the case of the past caretaker government. Even in America the incumbent government never goes witch hunting against their past leaders for any reason. The might have different opinions on different things the goal is the same, to strenthen the country from its enemies and help democracy flourish.

AL came to power with a very big margin during the Dec 2008 election. The people from all walks of life lend a big hand to this surprise win by a big margin and they were expecting a big change that they can be proud of. Instead the happening of the last 90 days are a bit disappointing and deserves a closer look. Mostly AL’s methods of governing and accountability are at stake and needs to change.
- The Upazila election during the month of January had a very low participation rate. May be its because the government was not supportive of the idea of the Upazila system. Upazila system that was initiated by the Ershad government, truly was a remarkable achievement and helped to grow the enthusiasm of the ordinary people of Bangladesh.
- Handling of the BDR Massacre was a mess and full of controversy. The government stood by and let the mutiny suspects kill more than 60 of the best Army officers of Bangladesh. What is worse, there was no recourse of actions or even firing of the people who were suppose to handle the situation maturely. Even the junior state minister Taj who was in Washington DC to cater to his Subway restaurant was not even reprimanded and removed for this carelessness and lack of responsibility.
- Passage of the Upazila Parishad bill which was a complete disappointment for the people. Giving the MP’s the say into everything what the Upazila chairman does and will do is a complete opposite to the spirit of the bill and will hamper the sovereign activities of the Upazila chairmans, not to mention the hold ups.
- Removal of the eminent VC Prof Nazrul Islam of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), was very much done to satisfy the pro-Awami League doctors’ association Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad. Prof. Nazrul Islam was installed by the last caretaker government of Fakhruddin and was a very able body personal and respected widely.
- Force Removal of the ACC chairman Hasan Mashud Chowdhury is a disgrace for the AL lead government and its pledge to fight corruption and nepotism in the Government. What is striking is comments by some ministers who were branded as corrupt by the same ACC they are going after now. I guess the corrupt triumphs again.
- Cabinet decision to remove Khaleda Zia from her residence was an act of vengeance and cruelty. Removing any person specially an opposition leader of the house is wrong and done not for the good of the nation but for pure vengeance.
- Dilly delaying of the award of Off Shore oil block to Conoco Phillips and others. In the mean time, India has called for its tender to award off shore blocks for exploration. The question remains was it done to give India more time, so that they can encroach more of our areas and bid as their own? The visit by Indian Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon right after their floating of tender is rather suspicious.
- Closing of various education institutions by the AL student terrorist activities are becoming a norm of the nation. Session jams are increasing as a matter of fact and hampering the real growth of the education system of Bangladesh.
- Continuous branding of Bangladesh as a Islamic fundamentalist heaven is self destructive and bears no good for Bangladesh. It only tarnishes the image of Bangladesh to the world. I am not sure how it helps AL by branding Bangladesh a terrorist country.
- Relying heavily on Russia to build our first Nuclear power plant to augment our electricity generation. While there are other options and chance to have similar agreements to construct more Nuclear Power plants with the assistance of China and South Korea, the government of AL is only looking a viable deal with Russia. Russia has a bad reputation about completion of their projects and we should not rely only on one source for our energy rather have multiple sources.
- The transit deal and water transport deal was done hastily with India without any opinion from public.
- Daily shuffle of Administrative officials are becoming a major stumbling block for progress and enthusiasm of secretariat officials are at an all time low. There should be some kind of a rule about their shuffle and reshuffle without hampering the day to day activities of the officials and their state activities.
Now some positive outcomes:
- The much anticipated go ahead for Padma Bridge design. It will undoubtedly be the biggest project of this government.
- The go ahead to implement Rooppur Nuclear Power plant is another milestone in AL’s time.
- Pledge to hold war crimes trial through special tribunal courts.
- Pledge to dredge major rivers of Bangladesh to mitigate the sufferings of people and safeguard the river system of Bangladesh.
- Pledge to go ahead with the caretaker government plan to construct multiple roads and transport system in and around Dhaka to fix the traffic problem.
- Pledge to set up a performance based system for Government employees.
- Pledge to construct Deep sea port at Sonadia and subsequent expansion of the port facilities.
- The jails of JMB activists and their arrests.
- The passage of the CrPC bill.
- The passage of the Biman Bangladesh, Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Board, and Dhaka Electricity Supply Authority bill that was promulgated by the Caretaker government
- Finally the legality of the caretaker government by the AL lead parliament.
- Instruction to not to go overboard with the founding father of the nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was a strategic move.
I might have left some other details and lists. But most of all, the people of the country will decide what AL or its partners did in the last 90 days. If I was, I would have been more careful and taken into account the emotions of the people of Bangladesh and judge from their perspective. After all, they are the true judges of our activities. Leaders come and go but their legacy stays and haunt others. Election pledges are easy to say but harder to do.

News coming out from different news organization depict a rather sad tale of BNP. BNP supporters are frustrated, downhearted and without any real goal. To get BNP out of this mud hole there are couple of things that it can do to re image itself to the ordinary people. Below is a list of steps that it can take.
1. Bring the old reformists to the BNP specially Mannan Bhuiyan and his group.
2. Remove old guards and controversial leaders from the party and make sure anyone with corrupt credentials like Tareq, Koko, Mamun, Babar can not come back to BNP. We know it was the corrupt ministers, MPs and their relatives who destroyed the image of the party.
3. Take grassroots leaders recommendations to democratically revitalize the party. Take the bottom up approach instead of top to the bottom. The party leaders should be elected not thrust upon and through vote.
4. Remove Jaamat out of the alliance and stop gambling with BNP’s reputation. BNP’s reputation was damaged due to its attachment to Jaamat.
5. Reconstitute the party committees with younger leaders with clean image and honest attitudes.
6. Create a new constitution with in the party that adheres and practices democratic norms and not some family politics.
7. Hold central council session as specified in the constitution every two years or even change that to every year.
8. Change the old mentality of politics, hartal, attitude of boycotting the parliament.
9. Accept the defeat and congratulate the new government. Lend in hand to work with the party.
10. Stop grudging against the CTG and take responsibility for its own mistakes and congratulate CTG for a fair and clean election.
It is the grassroots leaders who are the bread and barter of BNP and they should be treated with respect and their comments should be taken seriously. Only then BNP can come out of its misery and be a viable leading party. Bangladeshi will surely give them the right credit they deserve if they can play it right.

The recent news coming from Bangladesh is a bit disheartening and deserves a closer look. First the election held on Aug 4th, 2008 failed to bring considerable changes that the people have hoped for. The election brought back almost 65% of the peoples who had questionable criminal records. According to Brotee http://thedailystar.net/story.php?nid=49473, the educational qualification of the candidates was not at the expected level and they crossed the spending level by almost 200% and bought some of their votes. Secondly, the High court release of corrupt politicians and business personalities http://thedailystar.net/story.php?nid=49319 are making a mockery of the justice system of Bangladesh. Thirdly, the heavy politicized High Court of Bangladesh ruled against EC about holding the Aug 4 election in a not partisan way and made the election of Aug 4th as a political one. All these along with other minor and major changes in the government is making everyone to think that the much anticipated changes that people have hoped for is getting rolled back and the same corrupt people is coming back in a new fashion and bottle. The present CTG is giving an impression that they become weak and trying to get out of the way as soon as possible by holding a election that will put back some of the old guard that the people tried to get rid of instead of making this country as prosperous as it can get.
I guess it all started happening after the resignation of Barrister Moinul Hossain, who was actually doing great work for the country than harm. The eminent lawyer Dr. Kamal Hossain was another true patriotic force who was also trying to progress this country for the good and bring accountability for the nation. The present CTG needs to look at its recent decisions closely and make a farm decision & correct steps. After all the whole nation is looking at them for positive results and they have the support till now.

1/11 was like a 9/11 to the people of Bangladesh. On this day, the people of Bangladesh revolted against the corrupt politicians and the army installed a Caretaker Government that had widespread support among the populace. I have to say, this is the first time in the history of Bangladesh, that any government garnered that kind of support. Even 15 months after their install, they are still thriving with one or two dents. Their changes in the overall structure of the government specially Independent Election Commission, Free Anti Corruption Commission, separation of judiciary from the administration, reform in the police department, electoral law, Public Service Commission, Employment Bureau and numerous other changes are well received and praised. In the last 15 months the country saw the largest out flow of employments oversease and inflow of remittance. The country received the largest Aid after almost a decade. All these were possible with few western educated professionals who are pro-active, action oriented, technocrates and very focused. We have to congratulate them for their well deserved work and also hope like everone else http://globalpolitician.com/24497-bangladesh, we can not afford to let Bangladesh rule again by some crooks, cuprits and corrupt politicians. The country deserves much better.
