US help in Maritime Patrol for Dhaka

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009 by choudhury

The recent overture by the Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia for helping to patrol the Maritime boundary of Bangladesh is a very welcome gesture. Bangladesh does not have the necessary resources or means to patrol the vast area of the Bay of Bengal. The recent encroachment of our Area by India and Myanmmar should be a warning for the Bangladeshi government. This joint patrol will help Bangladesh safeguard its mineral resources and give a warning to other countries in the area about the consequences of grabbing its land. The Bay of Bengal is rich with oil and gas, India and Myanmmar both discovered more than 100 tft of Gas. Bangladesh can do the same if it had the resources and the will. This joint patrol will undoubtedly help Bangladesh claim its rightful share and augment its economy.
Many people might come up with a conspiracy theory like America wants to claim our sea or build a base here. If the government and Armed forces of Bangladesh are sincere and watchful, there is no way anyone can occupy its land without its permission. They just have to careful and vigilant.
